Biotechnology and bioengineering are leading to new solutions in the food chain, and are being used to develop alternative protein sources, such as plant-based meat and lab-grown meat, to improve crop yields, increase disease resistance, and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, to fortify food with essential micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, to improve public health and reduce malnutrition.
